How We Helped Certify Sustainability for North Atlantic Swordfish

How We Helped Certify Sustainability for North Atlantic Swordfish

Our Signature Fish

You might say swordfish our signature fish – because it’s in our name – although we branched out carefully long ago, decades before we set out to become the best source of shellfish and online fresh fish delivery. Swordfish is vitally important to Boston Sword & Tuna, and so we got involved right away when supplies were threatened in the North Atlantic years ago.

Today, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) calls North Atlantic swordfish “one of the most sustainable seafood choices.” The unique icon system we use on our website to help guide you to sustainable selections designates swordfish a Best Choice, a title we reserve for seafood that’s abundant, well managed, and caught or farmed in environmentally friendly ways. We want you to feel good in every way about the gourmet fresh seafood home delivery online you receive from Boston Sword & Tuna.

Founding Members

That turnaround didn’t happen by itself. Recognizing that our reliance on North Atlantic swordfish brought responsibility with it, Boston Sword & Tuna was one of the founding members of Sustainable Seafood LLC.

After fact-finding, developing conservation methods in collaboration with trusted fisheries, and careful preparation, we applied to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for certification of the U.S. North Atlantic longline swordfish fishery. Our efforts were successful, and MSC certification is the world-leading environmental standard for sustainable fisheries, the top of the mark in our line of work for sustainability. It’s your further assurance of sustainable practices and a traceable, responsible supply chain.

And What a Catch They Are

The swordfish is beautiful, migratory, big, and fast. Our North Atlantic catch can be around 400 pounds, and even larger ones are not unheard of, although our average catch is about 200 pounds. Swordfish swim at up to 50 miles per hour, making them one of the top 10 fastest animals in the ocean. Ours are almost always caught by long-line rigs.

Being present in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans, and even in the Black Sea and Mediterranean, swordfish are typed by where they live. Unlike marlin, swordfish are of only one species. They like warmer waters and are willing to travel to find them. Our North Atlantic swordfish ease on down south during the winter, like a lot of their fans, and so we’ve cultivated relationships with reliable Australian fisheries, too, where their seasons are opposite of ours. Yes, Down Under is a long way away, but jets are fast and the airport is five minutes from here, so it’s always a good time to order swordfish from Boston Sword & Tuna.

A Way of Life for Us

When our great-grandfather began, sustainability was a way of life he brought from Sicily. Yet, because it can’t be taken for granted, we became active in sustainability as a fundamental part of Boston Sword & Tuna. It’s part of how we’re using five generations of commitment and know-how to get fresh fish overnight to your door. Just visit us for the best fresh seafood market online.

Michael J. Scola

While earning his degree in business, Michael spent summers and winters working the floor at Boston Sword & Tuna and learning the seafood business from the ground up. As a fifth-generation fishmonger and handled different species, lumped sword and tuna, sorted through vats of haddock and cod, broke down salmon cases, graded the fish, and more. During this time, Mike was a veritable sea sponge, learning from the most-experienced seafood professionals in the game while acquiring the tools needed to be successful in this gritty industry.
