Longline Fishing: A Sustainable Seafood Initiative

How We Care for Our Seas

Longline fishing is one of the techniques we use as your best fresh seafood market online, to support sustainability. At Boston Sword & Tuna, longline techniques were part of the picture when, in 2012, we helped found the Sustainable Seafood Council to return the U.S. North Atlantic fisheries to certified sustainability with the Marine Stewardship Council. We owe a lot to the practice of longline fishing, especially when it comes to the fish featured in our name, swordfish and tuna.

One reason longline fishing became an integral part of our Sustainable Seafood initiative here, at your sea to home online fish market, is because it is more discriminating than netting and other harvesting methods. Although bycatch is a factor in fishing, nets can be far more indiscriminate, while longline fishing offers greater selectivity by bait and more accurate placement of the lines, in addition to the choice of when and where to fish. Reassuring to know this when you buy fresh tuna fish online from Boston Sword & Tuna.

The Name Really Fits

Let’s have a look at how longline fishing works for a prosperous ocean and a healthy ecosystem at your own fresh seafood company. First thing to know is that longline very much means what it says; the main line in a longline rig, usually a robust monofilament, can be miles long, containing hundreds of branch lines, called snoods or gangions, and thousands of baited fishhooks. The lines can be set at selective depths using a blend of floats and weights. Bright streamer lines are used to scare away birds for their own safety.

For swordfish and tuna, our fisheries set the depth for pelagic longline, that is, shallow to mid-range depths depending on the fishing grounds, because that’s where the specific fish we’re seeking dwell. Hooks are baited to attract swordfish or tuna, and the bait may consist of squid, mackerel, or sardines.

Another Place Relationships Pay Off

The relationships we’ve built at Boston Sword & Tuna, in our five generations of becoming your source for gourmet fresh seafood home delivery online, have enabled us to team with, and stick with, boats and fisheries that observe the highest standards of sustainability.

To become your source for shellfish and online fresh fish delivery, longline fishing is just one of the ways we’ve taken our rightful place in supporting the sustainability of life in our precious oceans. Boston Sword & Tuna is using five generations of commitment and know-how to be your own best fresh seafood market online.

Michael J. Scola

While earning his degree in business, Michael spent summers and winters working the floor at Boston Sword & Tuna and learning the seafood business from the ground up. As a fifth-generation fishmonger and handled different species, lumped sword and tuna, sorted through vats of haddock and cod, broke down salmon cases, graded the fish, and more. During this time, Mike was a veritable sea sponge, learning from the most-experienced seafood professionals in the game while acquiring the tools needed to be successful in this gritty industry.
