The Hub for Commercial Fisheries

What Houston was to oil, what New York was to finance, what Hollywood was to movies, what Kansas City was to beef, that’s only the beginning of what New Bedford, Massachusetts, was in the days of whaling. Only historians and the occasional author can even begin to re-create the importance of New Bedford, Nantucket, and New London to the nation’s economy when “oil” meant whale oil, and it was used for more products than we can easily imagine today, as well as to light the darkness of the 19th Century.

The skills and ways and culture of that era remain today in the fisheries that converge on New Bedford with their catch. Because the port and its location had proven so highly serviceable for so long, it was natural that New Bedford would become a hub for commercial fisheries to find their market. And as the nation’s appetite for seafood grew – and continues to grow – New Bedford became the site of an auction unlike any other for its size and variety.

The Boston Fish Pier – From Our World to Our Base

As Boston Sword & Tuna became more and more widely depended on, over the course of five generations, our great grandfather’s place on the Boston Fish Pier had to grow. So we planted and grew the great facility we use now, only a few blocks away. Just as we needed more room to do our work, we sought an even broader view of the fresh fish available on any given day. And for many years Boston Sword & Tuna has been a prominent patron of the auction that grew up in New Bedford.

Just as our customers’ needs grew and diversified, the New Bedford Auction became a more and more reliable source for Boston Sword & Tuna. And as we set out to become your own best fresh seafood market online, the Auction remained relevant by carefully adding online tools to its own operation.

Relevant Still in the Digital Age

In 1994, a Buyers and Sellers Exchange was established online to make all that was good about the New Bedford Auction available online, consistently and reliably. With a 100% open-door policy for checking on the catch personally – a policy we regularly use – the Auction has managed to keep what was good about the old ways and scale them effectively for the new. In particular, the Auction is a key source for fresh sea scallops, for example. In the process, the Auction has played a role in enabling Boston Sword & Tuna to continually offer you shellfish and online fresh fish delivery.

The New Bedford Auction is just one of the many places where our family has worked steadily to know well, and to be known as the sea-to-home online fish market. Our own trusted sources are vital, as Boston Sword & Tuna uses five generations of relationships and experience to become the source you turn to with confidence for gourmet fresh seafood home delivery online.

Michael J. Scola

While earning his degree in business, Michael spent summers and winters working the floor at Boston Sword & Tuna and learning the seafood business from the ground up. As a fifth-generation fishmonger and handled different species, lumped sword and tuna, sorted through vats of haddock and cod, broke down salmon cases, graded the fish, and more. During this time, Mike was a veritable sea sponge, learning from the most-experienced seafood professionals in the game while acquiring the tools needed to be successful in this gritty industry.
